The court fee
Applying for the grant of probate involves a court fee, currently about £300, and none if the estate is worth under £5,000. Check the current figure on GOV.UK before you apply.
Professional fees
Many families use a solicitor or other probate provider. Some charge a percentage of the estate, others a fixed fee or an hourly rate. Always ask for a written quote and what it includes. Doing it yourself saves the fees, but it takes time and carries personal responsibility.
Other costs
- Valuations of property and possessions
- Estate agent and conveyancing fees if a property is sold
- Funeral costs, which are paid from the estate
- Inheritance Tax, which is separate from probate costs and only payable if the estate is above the allowances
- Certified copies of the grant
How to keep costs down
- Keep your papers and accounts in order, and tell your executors where they are.
- Choose capable executors, who are less likely to need expensive help.
- Consider simplifying how assets are held, for example through joint ownership or a trust, with advice.

Quick answers
Common questions
Do all estates need probate?
No. Some small estates, and assets passing automatically, such as joint accounts, may not. Banks and other holders have their own limits, so check with each.
Is Inheritance Tax part of the cost of probate?
It is a separate tax. It is only due where the estate is above the allowances, but it usually has to be paid before the grant is issued.
Can the estate pay the probate fees?
Yes. Reasonable costs are paid from the estate. They reduce what the beneficiaries receive.
